Read to Succeed

In an effort to encourage literacy and reading for pleasure the Primary, Junior and Intermediate classes have chosen to participate in our 2011Read to Succeed program organized by the students from Mr. Shearim’s, Mrs. Vrugteman’s and Mr. Anschuetz’ classes.During February, March and April students will be asked to track the number of minutes they read each month. At the end of each month their records will be collected and submitted to the program coordinators. The program is based on the honour system. In class we will be stressing the importance of keeping an accurate record of their results.Participating students will submit monthly Read to Succeed tracking sheets to the Read to Succeed team, who will then collate the data into bar graph form. For every 1000 minutes read by a student, he or she will receive a ballot to enter into a draw for prizes. The prizes include one signed Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, six signed Leafs’ and Argos’ pictures, three Raptor’s prize packs (consisting of a mini-basketball, knapsack, stickers and pennant), two $50, and four $25 gift cards to local restaurants.

Please encourage your son or daughter to read for 15-30 minutes or more a night and record the results on their tracking sheet. Newspapers, comic books, video game manuals, chapter books, magazines, flash cards, menus, t.v. guides, cookbooks, recipes, signs, pamphlets and advertisements are just some of the suggestions for reading opportunities. We suggest the tracking sheet should be kept in your Agenda to ensure safe travel between home and school. Remember to get the tracking sheet signed by a parent or guardian.
Have fun and READ TO SUCCEED!
